Computer Lab
Open Book Language Arts Program
Mrs. Stachovic will be taking your kindergarteners to the computer lab at least 4 times a week to complete, at their own pace, our language arts program formerly known as Sequoyah or Open Book. The Open Book is a program committed to teaching people the necessary skills to read, write and understand the English language. It is named after the Cherokee Native American who created a written form of his people's language, which had only previously existed in verbal form.
We use this program to teach 52 phonemes in 39 words as well as introduce the children to computer skills. Their progress is tracked in an interactive chart of sounds listed by letter & a corresponding picture (see screenshot picture). As well as being a visible reminder of what they have learned, the student can click on the sound in the chart for an audio refresher. Students also build words from the sounds they learn in the Word Builder section and click on learned words in the Word Recognition pages. Before a child moves on to the next word in the program, he/she is tested on the current word's sounds and the word is checked off on their Open Book chart in their computer lab folder. A copy of this chart will be provided to parents at Open House.
Our class spelling words (formed into word families) are based on the program's words. With this program your child also learns to write sentences and Mrs. Stachovic requires their sentences to have at least five words. This is the rule in the classroom as well and by the end of the year, the children are reading and writing!
